A Day with Our Amazing Seniors at the SG60 Initiative

There are days that quietly pass by, and then there are days that leave a lasting mark on your heart. Being part of the SG60 InitiativeSeniors’ Connect, held in the presence of our Prime Minister, Mr. Lawrence Wong — was one of those days I’ll always remember.

It wasn’t just about the performances, the speeches, or the program. It was about the people — the aunties and uncles who’ve journeyed through decades with grace, strength, and a quiet resilience that speaks volumes. That day, I didn’t just perform for them — I connected with them, soul to soul.

A Personal Song, A Shared Memory

When I was invited to sing 《早安老师》 (“Good Morning, Teacher”), I knew this wasn’t just any performance. It was a nostalgic piece — a song that once echoed in schools, a melody that many seniors still hum with ease and warmth.

As the music began and I sang the familiar lines, I looked out into the crowd. To my surprise and joy, so many of them were singing along — smiling, clapping, even gently swaying to the rhythm.

“老师早!同学们好…” rang through the hall with such energy, it felt like a wave of shared memory washing over all of us.

These are the very people who have watched me on screen for years. Some of them grew older watching my characters evolve, and in many ways, I’ve grown alongside them — not just as an actress, but as a fellow Singaporean.

他们是看我的戏长大的,我也在他们的陪伴下成长。

They grew up with my shows, and I grew with their companionship.

Singing with an Old Friend

What made this performance even more meaningful was singing alongside 茹萍姐姐 (Ruxin Jie). We’ve shared stages and screens before, but this was different. This was a moment that felt both intimate and communal — singing not just to an audience, but with them.

There’s something profoundly beautiful about performing for those who have walked a longer path than you, who carry stories in every line on their face, every sparkle in their eye. Singing with Ruxin and seeing our seniors beam with joy — it reminded me that art, at its best, is about connection.

Celebrating a Generation That Inspires

Being part of the SG60 Initiative wasn’t just about honouring the past — it was also about celebrating the present and future of our ageing population.

I was deeply moved to see so many seniors staying active, joyful, and deeply engaged with the world around them. Whether they were dancing, singing, or simply soaking in the energy of the day, there was a vibrance in the room that couldn’t be missed.

It reminded me that ageing gracefully isn’t just about staying healthy — though that’s important — but about continuing to participate, to give, to share, and to live with purpose.

This event, tied in with the larger Healthy Living and Healthier SG movement, shows us that caring for our seniors isn’t just a policy — it’s a cultural value. And seeing it in action gave me hope.

In the Presence of Leadership

Having our Prime Minister, Mr. Lawrence Wong, grace the event added a special sense of recognition and respect. His presence spoke volumes about how much our country values the wisdom and contribution of our elder generation.

As someone who has lived in the public eye, I’ve seen how national moments like these can bring us closer — not just as individuals, but as a community. It was uplifting to see him engaging with the seniors so naturally, and to know that we are being led by someone who recognizes and honours those who built the foundation we stand on.

A Grateful Heart

As the event came to a close, I found myself lingering a little longer. Taking photos, exchanging hugs, hearing heartfelt words from seniors who told me how much my roles have meant to them over the years. One uncle told me he still remembers my lines from a show 20 years ago. I laughed, but also felt incredibly touched.

It’s easy to take moments like this for granted. But on days like this, I’m reminded how blessed I am — not just to still be performing, but to be part of something bigger. A community. A story. A country that takes pride in its past and cares deeply for its people.

Looking Ahead

As Singapore turns 60, we are not only reflecting on the years that have passed — we are looking to the future. And our seniors, far from fading into the background, are leading the way in showing us what it means to live fully, with heart and humour, at every age.

I left the event feeling recharged. Inspired. And full of hope.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible — especially the wonderful team behind Seniors’ Connect, my dear singing partner Ruxin, and of course, every senior who sang, smiled, and reminded me why I do what I do.
