You know, people always ask me about my fitness secrets, and honestly? I used to roll my eyes at that question. But after decades in the entertainment industry and countless ups and downs with my health, I’ve realized that sharing what works (and what doesn’t!) might actually help someone out there who’s struggling like I once was.
Let me be real with you – staying fit and healthy isn’t just about looking good on screen or stage. It’s about feeling good in your own skin, having the energy to chase your dreams, and honestly, just being able to keep up with life’s crazy demands!
The Reality Check That Changed Everything

Back in my early performing days, I thought I was invincible. Dancing all night, eating whatever, sleeping whenever – sound familiar? Then one day during rehearsals, I nearly collapsed from exhaustion. That was my wake-up call, and boy, did I need it.
I remember thinking, “Girl, you can’t keep treating your body like a rental car!” That’s when I started taking my health seriously. It wasn’t about becoming some fitness guru overnight – it was about making small changes that actually stuck.
My Not-So-Perfect Fitness Journey
Let me tell you about my biggest fitness mistake ever. I once thought doing extreme workouts for two weeks would magically transform me into a fitness model. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work! All I got was sore muscles and a bruised ego.
What actually worked was finding activities I genuinely enjoyed. For me, that meant mixing traditional exercises with dance movements – because let’s face it, if you’re not having fun, you’re not gonna stick with it. I started with just 20 minutes a day, and gradually built up from there.
Here’s what I learned the hard way: consistency beats intensity every single time. Those Instagram fitness models doing crazy workouts? Good for them, but that’s not sustainable for most of us regular folks.
Eating Smart, Not Starving
Oh man, don’t get me started on all the ridiculous diets I tried! There was this one time I attempted to live on nothing but smoothies for a week. By day three, I was so hangry that even my pet fish was avoiding me.
The truth is, healthy eating doesn’t mean punishing yourself. I learned to focus on whole foods, proper portions, and – this is crucial – not feeling guilty about enjoying treats occasionally. Life’s too short to never have your favorite dessert!
My go-to approach now? I fill half my plate with vegetables, add some lean protein, include healthy fats, and don’t stress too much about the rest. Simple, right?
The Mental Game Nobody Talks About
Here’s something that surprised me: fitness is like 70% mental. When I was struggling with motivation, I started keeping a journal of how I felt after workouts. Turns out, I always felt better – even when I didn’t want to exercise in the first place.
I also had to learn to be patient with myself. Some days I felt like a fitness queen, other days I could barely manage a 10-minute walk. Both are okay! The key is showing up for yourself, even when it’s imperfect.
What Actually Works Long-Term
After years of trial and error, here’s what I swear by:
- Start small – even 10 minutes of movement counts
- Find activities you actually enjoy (dancing, hiking, swimming – whatever floats your boat)
- Meal prep on Sundays to avoid those “what’s for dinner?” panic moments
- Get enough sleep – seriously, this one’s huge
- Stay hydrated (I aim for 8 glasses but honestly, sometimes I forget)
- Listen to your body – rest when you need it
The biggest game-changer? Having a support system. Whether it’s workout buddies, family, or even online communities – having people who get it makes all the difference.
My Health Philosophy Today
These days, I focus on what my body can do rather than how it looks. Can I dance for hours? Can I keep up with my busy schedule? Do I have energy for the things I love? Those are the questions that matter.
I’m not perfect – nobody is! Some weeks I’m on top of my game, other weeks I’m eating takeout and skipping workouts. The difference now is that I don’t let those moments derail my entire journey.
Keep Moving Forward, One Step at a Time
Remember, your fitness and health journey is uniquely yours. What works for me might not work for you, and that’s perfectly fine! The important thing is to start somewhere and be kind to yourself along the way.
Don’t aim for perfection – aim for progress. Celebrate the small wins, learn from the setbacks, and most importantly, enjoy the process. Your future self will thank you for the effort you put in today.
